Thanks for the calibration tip Ryan. Apparently Sony BDs have calibration software built into them as well. Would the DVD calibration you mentioned be as accurate as a Blue-ray calibration disk? It's the same player but we're assuming that the machine has identical colour profiles for both DVD and BD.

Thanks for a well thought out post. We've given up broadcast TV altogether, but are looking at getting a 1080p panel at some point for movies, and TV shows on DVD... but I'd also like to get a new computer/video card to run it, and at least a new 5.1 system, so it all becomes rather 'big'. Ironically, I've been watching more and more video on my iPod Touch. The joys of technology!

Great write-up Michael...

Couple of things:

1. Blu-ray player... you've got your but for others reading it's worth just looking at getting a PS3 rather than a specific Blu-Ray player... apparantly the drives on quite good and you also get access to features like BD Live etc.

2. In-store settings - yeah, don't trust them... the default settings are done so the TV is more likely to catch your eye on the giant wall of screens at your local big box. Lots of contrast and usually the red levels are way higher than they should be.

I'd highly recommend getting an optimization disk like Avia or Digital Video Essentials and tweaking your system - you'll be a lot happier. Some DVDs also include the THX Optimode which will also make an improvement if you don't want to shell out for a separate disc.
